Reimagining the future of education in the Asia-Pacific

In a time of global inequity, shifting geopolitical landscapes, and technological disruption, the role of education as a force for development has never been more critical. The inaugural Development and Education (DevEd) Conference 2025 – to be held from 11–13 November at the State Library Victoria in Melbourne – is set to bring together researchers, policymakers and practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific to examine how education can more powerfully contribute to equitable, inclusive and sustainable development.

Organised by ACER in partnership with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the 3-day conference will focus on bridging the gap between evidence, policy and practice through the theme of ‘Reimagining the future of education in the Asia-Pacific.’

The DevEd 2025 agenda goes beyond traditional development dialogue. It invites participants to think boldly about what needs to change – and how – to ensure everyone, regardless of context has access to quality education. The conference explores 3 critical sub-themes:

• Systems transformation: Creating education systems that are fit for the future means tackling today’s challenges head-on, drawing on proven strategies, and designing for lasting change. This theme explores policies and practices that drive reform, focusing on effectiveness, scalability and long-term impact.
• Equity and inclusion: Education is a powerful driver of opportunity, but for many in marginalised communities, access to quality learning remains out of reach. This theme explores how inclusive policies and practices can break down these barriers, ensuring every learner has a fair chance to thrive, regardless of background or circumstance.
• Foundational learning: Foundational skills such as literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional learning are essential building blocks for lifelong learning and success. This theme focuses on how to strengthen these core competencies, particularly in settings shaped by rapid technological change, climate change and crises.

What sets DevEd apart is its focus on the Asia-Pacific. The conference aims to spotlight local innovations, regional partnerships and research-informed practice that can inform both national reforms and global strategies.

DevEd 2025 is a forum for discussion and a catalyst for collaboration. Across keynote sessions, interactive panels and networking events, attendees will explore how stronger connections between evidence generators and education leaders can drive practical change.
